How to Find YouTube Search Trends

A YouTube presence is a great way of attracting attention to your brand and generating leads. Growing a YouTube channel is not an easy task.

You’re competing with established brands and creators who have large communities when you own a small channel. How can you get a share of the 84% of video marketers who believe that video generates leads and sales?

Use YouTube to search for trends

YouTube’s most popular topics are used by video creators to guide their video content strategy. They also produce viral videos and republish unsuccessful videos.

What are the top YouTube search trends?

A Wyzowl survey from 2021 found that people spend 18 hour a week watching online videos. YouTube is the second most popular website worldwide (next to Google). It’s safe to assume that YouTube makes up the majority of this time.

It’s important to keep up with the latest trends in order to be able to make informed decisions.

YouTube search trends offer two types of topic ideas:

  1. People are drawn to proven topic ideas
  2. Breakout topics that are less competitive but still hold strong interest

These videos are more likely than others to be popular in YouTube discovery channels such as “Browse features”, and “Suggested video” while they wait for them rank.

Trending videos are more likely to be successful. I met YouTuber Kelechi Mena, who became viral in March 2020 after creating a video that was inspired by a trend she saw in her feed.

How to find YouTube Trends

Kelechi may have had a lucky escape with her discovery of YouTube trends’ power, but creators shouldn’t always rely on luck. These YouTube tools will assist you in leveraging YouTube trends to increase your channel.

1. Trending (YouTube Trending Video)

YouTube curates a collection of viral videos under the name “Trending.” The videos usually cover topics that appeals to different demographics.

These topics include videos about music, movies, celebrities, and world events. YouTube updates this list every 15 min to reflect current trends.

The Trending page, unlike the home feed which displays videos based on users’ preferences, shows the same videos to all countries except India. Indian viewers can see trends that are based on nine languages.

Signals are used to determine which videos are trending. These signals, according to Google include:

  • High viewing count
  • It’s amazing how fast views can come in
  • From where views originate
  • Video age
  • Comparison of video performance with recent videos from the same channel

Click on the Explore tab in sidebar to find Trending YouTube videos. Then, select Trending.

You can also visit the page directly from your browser. To view videos from another country’s top trending videos, click on the profile icon at the top right. Your video recommendations will also change.

2. Google Trends for YouTube

Google Trends shows you the popularity of a topic relative to other topics. Google Trends shows YouTube search popularity analysis by keywords and topics. The results are geared towards YouTube search queries and not web search.

Google Trends provides trend data within hours or minutes. Google uses search results to quickly process Trends data.

Here’s how Google Trends works.

  • Google divides each datapoint by the number of searches within a particular time period and geography to determine benchmark popularity
  • Next, Google adjusts the numbers from 0 to 100 based on topic popularity relative to other topics
  • A breakout search term is one that has seen a significant increase in search terms (a breakout term) and will have the “Breakout label” instead of a figure.

The Trends chart doesn’t show actual search volume data. They are simply the popularity of the topic. To validate Trend data, use a keyword search tool such as Semrush. This will ensure that the keyword has a valid search volume.

Low numbers, such as 10, indicate low popularity. However, 70-100 indicates that the topic is very popular.

Google Trends for YouTube can be accessed directly at the YouTube trends webpage, or you can filter search results using “YouTube Search”, on the Google Trends dashboard.

3. Video Rank Tracker

Video rank tracker allows you to monitor your YouTube channel’s performance. You can also track competitor channels to gain insight into your YouTube SEO strategy. This tool will display the average rank for each keyword that you track, as well as your overall keyword distribution.

Tubics developed the Rank Tracker app. It works slightly differently to the tools in the Semrush Toolkit. To make it work, you will need to add a competitor on your track list. While some methods only focus on YouTube’s top videos, your customized results will provide insights into competitor trends.

Follow the prompts for each step. Next, use YouTube or Semrush to add keywords manually.

The Video Rank Tracker pulls data from all your channels. This includes the view count and publish date. You can also see which videos are performing well in comparison to yours and create similar videos for you channel.
